Dr. Nicole G. Nalbandian (DDS, MS)
Pediatric dentistry addresses the dental needs of children throughout their many growth and developmental stages as they grow from age 0-18. The pediatric population poses some unique challenges, with a high propensity for caries (cavities), need for orthodontic alignment, and the transition from primary to permanent dentition. Dr. Nalbandian knows that the earlier you learn good pediatric dental habits, the easier it will be to keep a healthy smile for life.

What makes Pediatric Dentistry Essential
Unlike adults, the dental needs of our pediatric patients change very quickly over time as they mature. In our little ones, we are often addressing concerns like teething and developing good brushing habits early on. As kids grow, we begin to focus more on orthodontic alignment and caries prevention. It is during this stage that we also track the succession of ‘baby teeth’ to ‘adult teeth’ and guide patients and parents in this transition. Setting up kids for success early on is key to ensuring good oral health as adults.
Positive Dental Experience
Unfortunately, many people’s fear of dentists originates from their early childhood experiences. Dr. Nalbandian focuses on making sure that each visit is joyful and free from stress by meeting each patient at their appropriate developmental age. Kids are less afraid of what they know and we firmly believe that taking the time to explain to our little patients what we are doing and why we are doing it truly helps ease their fears. We hope to be part of your child’s dental journey and help them cultivate positive memories in the dental office which raises your child’s curiosity about their oral health rather than a fear of the dentist!
Preventive Care for Children
The core focus in pediatric dentistry is preventive care. To help prevent cavities and catch any potential problems before they become serious, regular child dental check up and cleanings are essential. Apart from some differences in the way children’s teeth are taken care of. Fluoride and dental sealants are some commonly used treatments for our pediatric patients that play a key role in preventing cavities from forming. We also touch on the subject of brushing and flossing properly so that parents and children can learn how to observe good oral hygiene at home.
How Do We Ease the Fears of a Pediatric Patient?
If you have a child that you feel may be extra anxious about coming to the office, we are well equipped and experienced to navage this. Here are some of the strategies we turn to that help our patients feel more at ease:
- Tell-Show-Do: This is a method commonly used with pediatric patients where we first ‘tell’ the patient what we are going to do, then we ‘show’ them what we are going to do and the tools we are going to use. This establishes a trust between the provider and the patient that the procedure is not going to be painful and give the patient an understanding of what is about to happen. Lastly, we ‘do’ the procedure.
- Netflix to the rescue!: Our office is equipped with TV’s in every room, which means we can put on our patients favorite shows to put them at ease and distract them from things that may be causing them anxiety.
- Positive feedback: We believe every trip to the dentist should end with a little ‘treat.’ Patients are motivated to get through their visit to have a chance to dig through the ‘toy box’ and pick a prize for doing such a great job.
Ultimately, the goal is to provide a happy and safe environment for all of our little patients. We hope to spark their curiosity about their health and hygiene rather than feed into their fears.
